I turn around 360° And what I find right in front of me Is a beautiful land full of forest trees Standing tall, they softly dance with the breeze I feel we're all the same Living life side-by-side of nature's grain Can you hear them coming, breaking life's true laws 'cause they hate to see this love in our eyes They build their walls high, till they can't even see or think straight And try to push us to the other side So hear my brothers and my sisters call And the weeping mothers for children they have lost We'll rise above, be all for one and one for all And we'll refuse to either bend, break or fall 'cause we're all the same Living life side-by-side of nature's grain Can you hear them coming, breaking life's true laws 'cause they hate to see this love in our eyes They build their walls high, till they can't even see or think straight And try to push us to the other side Love is stronger if we hold together now Let the sound Of hatred, fear and ignorance Become a deafening silence We'll stop you coming, breaking life's true laws 'cause you hate to see this love in our eyes You build your walls high, till you can't even see or think straight We defy you to push us to the other side Life is so sweet, don't let it pass you by Is this what you really want to leave behind

Water vapor falling from the sky, an infant stream Flowing gently down the mountainside, forming nature’s seam Fold into the ground, echo history’s sound You, you, you, you’re a river running You, you, you, you’re a river running, running to the sea Years you journeyed far across the land and stayed your course Even stormy times you never could have planned for, never took you from this source Deep inside of you, spirit shining true You, you, you, you're river running You, you, you, you’re a river running Those who force their man-made creed Would have you bend if not believe Try to cut you down to size Which only makes your waters rise Neither rancor nor remorse for those who try to change your course You, you, you, you’re a river running You, you, you, you’re a river running River is your name, blood pouring through your veins Flowing wildly to your heart where only goodness starts You’re splintering the ground where lie the fallen sounds Streaming are your hands that reach out to the empty echoes of the faithless River running free River running free

“Everybody's preaching at me what to say” It ain't no mystery, you just got to pray “What? For a better land or a better life?” Yeah, well it was always there, why d'you give yourself so much strife? Just try coming round, try coming round “Everybody's searching for a different sound” Just sing your tune though you don't think it's loud “They think they see it all but they're really blind” Well maybe they found what they're looking for but you're just too proud To try coming round, try coming round You say no one's there for you but I've tried to call You say it's hard to pin you down Then you say no one cares for you, no one really cares at all, hey… You can't see the woods for the trees but you'll cry me a river You try to save the air that you breathe; you say it won't last forever You better learn what you need before it's too late Try coming round, try coming round Try coming round, hear the sound Of a different time, you know can be found but You're giving it this, you're taking that You're wanting it all as a matter of fact But I don't believe you've ever tried Coming round

Sipping softly on a sunlit day Wish the sun would never go awayBrush my hands along the summer grassI look up high and see a skyThat's holding all my dreams Slowly drifting on a summer breeze Cast myself out to an open seaWhere the storm is taking over meI look up high and see a skyThat's raining down on me You may say that it's all a state of mindDisbelievers are of every shape and kindYou think it's easy as one, two, threeYou know me now, but you never knew me Where the storm is taking over meI look up high and see a skyThat's raining down on me You may say that it's all a state of mindDisbelievers are off every shape and kindYou think it's easy as one, two, threeYou know me now, but you never knew me I look up high and see a skyThat's raining down on me You may say that it's all a state of mindDisbelievers are off every shape and kindYou think it's easy as one, two, threeYou know me now, but you never knew me Sipping softly on a sunlit day I look up high and see a skyThat's holding all my dreams That's holding all my dreams

about

2+2=4 was written during 2016 and 2017 but was influenced as early as January 2016 by domestic and world events. The Other Side was the first manifestation of this moment in time. I felt I needed to write about love and intolerance and about never forgetting how beautiful we are as people and not to lose hope in each other. Stereo Stickman did a beautiful review of the song.

The other songs on “2+2” explore this more but from various perspectives.

Musical influences were also very much present, which is why the songs are stripped down in feel so as to support the lyrical content. These songs are bound by the same woven thread running through them: they are bare, organic, honest and lyrically poetic.

Exclusive to Bandcamp are extracts from my writing notebook using sketches to form the storyline and quotes from Fiona Ritchie and Doug Orr's book 'Wayfaring Strangers' which mentions how old Scots-Irish songs made their way to Appalachia like 'carrying streams'. This was part of the inspiration for the song.
